The Undergraduate Student Conference – System Error

The conference will feature keynote speakers such as Naomi Klein, and FIMS professors Warren Steel, and Tim Blackmore. More speakers are likely to be announced, so stay tuned for updates.
The FIMS Undergraduate Conference promises to be a unique opportunity for FIMS students to hear experts speak on intertwining topics of interest to FIMS students specifically, but also to any critical-minded person. Naomi Klein’s research focus on structures of media, economic, and political power, more specifically the (R)evolutionary Power of Climate Change, her talk will allow for attendees to engage with today’s most important issues surrounding the environment and political policy. She is the author of “No Logo” and “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism”.
Warren Steele will present research from his course “Mediated Nighmares of Disaster Capitalism” and offer a pressing critique on the current economic system as its own ‘system error’.
Timothy Blackmore is one of the founding professors of FIMS and his research centres around war and how we relate to and experience it through media. His book on war technologies and the human body, “War X: Human Extensions in Battlespace” was published in 2005.
The conference will take place on Saturday, March 1st in NatSci 145. The day will feature talks by all keynote speakers, as well as a panel discussion in the afternoon. Light refreshments will be provided. FIMS students will be given a period of free, online, pre-registration between Jan 20 and Feb 10. During this time, any FIMS student who paid into the Undergraduate Student Fund will be guaranteed a seat at the conference. After this period, ticket sales will open for all students and members of the campus community.
System Error promises to be a day of expanding intellectual horizons and challenging topics. The FIMSSC is proud to bring this event to Western, and we hope to see you there.
